Edit:0096500 Date:2015-12-16

The mission of the discipline of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine is to conduct original, cutting-edge research in a multi/inter-disciplinary manner, to understand the fundamental mechanism of stem cells and regenerative medicine, to integrate basic biological studies and novel biotechnology with clinical research on major diseases in Sports Medicine, and to improve health care that is vital to the nation’s well-being.

The discipline leader is Professor Hong Wei Ouyang, who is an awardee of the National "1000-talent"plan (Qian-Ren), the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scientists by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Top ten Orthopaedic young doctor by Chinese Association of Orthopaedic surgeons, and among the top 5 Most Cited Chinese Researchers in the field of biomedical engineering by Elsevier. Currently, it is a talent incubator and research base for the Key scientific and technological innovation team of Zhejiang Province, the Key scientific and technological innovation subject of Zhejiang Province, and the Key Laboratory of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine of Zhejiang Province.

The discipline of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine has about 14 faculty and staff members including 6 professors, 6 associate professors, and 2 assistant professors. Among them, one professor is awarded by National Outstanding Young Scientist of China and the National "1000-talent"plan scholar. One professor is entitled as Qiushi Distinguished Professor. Two professors are awarded by National Excellent Young Scientists of China. And three professors are in the “New Century Excellent Talent Support Program” of the Ministry of Education, China. Currently, about 54 full-time students register in our discipline (excluding 3 overseas students), including 30 PhD candidates and 24 master candidates. Since the establishment of this discipline, it has had 35 postgradates achieving master and doctoral degrees. Among them, one was nominated as National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, six were awarded by the Provincial Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, and twenty-six students achieved academic awards in international conferences in the fields of cartilage, tissue engineering and biomedicine. At present, the discipline is cooperating with several well-known Universities to cultivate personnel and research, including the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Pittsburgh, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Lausanne, and the University of Pittsburgh etc.

In the last ten years, our discipline has been awarded more than 20 major research grants including national key research grants such as Special Foundation for Stem Cells and Translational Research of State Key Research Program of China, 973 projects, 863 projects, National Outstanding Youth Fund projects, National Natural Science Foundation of key research projects plan, and more than 15 National Natural Science Foundation and international cooperation projects. Nearly 100 research articles have been cited by SCI. Some are published in SCI journals of high impact factor above 10 as the first author affiliations, including Nature, Sci Adv., Ann Rheum Dis., Adv Func Mater., and Cell Res. etc. Some are published in those journals of academic societies among the fields of sports medicine and regenerative medicine, such as Stem Cells, Biomaterials, Cell Rep., Tissue Eng., Cell Transplant., Arthritis Rheum., Acta Biomater., and J Clin Endocrinol Metab. etc. More than 20 National Invention Patents have been authorized and to be authorized. As for the translational study, the discipline is the first one that sets the example and method for clinical translation of tissue engineering.

Through almost 10-year construction, the discipline has witnessed a well-formed, creative, innovative grouping growing up, which has already become a sunny and warm home made of distinguished professors, obliging staff and intelligent students.
