About Us

Department of Pharmacology was founded in the beginning of the Zhejiang University School of Medcine, established and developed by several generations of famous pharmacologists, such as Yu dezhang, Bian rulian, Zhang yuanpei, Geng baoqin, Fang ruiying, Zheng xiufeng, Yong dingguo, Yang qiuhuo, Zhou hanliang, Fang liben, Chen Jiqiang, Tang Fadi, Wei Erqing, Xie qiangmin, Chen Zhong. Our discipline established the strong teaching and research system in four fields: respiratory and inflammatory immune pharmacology, neuropharmacology, molecular pharmacology and cancer pharmacology. After the reform and opening-up policy of China, our discipline closely followed the trend and developed rapidly. Listed below are the momentous turning point of our discipline: 

•    In 1981, our discipline was authorized for master’s degree;

•    Since 1994, our discipline honored as the mainly supported discipline in zhejiang province;

•    In 1997, two key laboratories of the ministry/provincial were established in our discipline. ( Pharmaceutical administration drug research center of zhejiang respiratory medicine research laboratory, key laboratory of the provincial, and Cerebrovascular, neurological drug screening and Chinese herbal medicine development and evaluation research laboratory, laboratory of neurophysiology)

•    In 2000, our discipline was authorized for doctorate by the state council.

•    Since 2003, our discipline was honored the key discipline in the province.

•    Since 2007, our discipline became the registration units of the health key laboratories—laboratory of medical neurobiology;

•    Since 2011, our discipline became the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Reproduction and Genetics.

Research Features

At present, there are four research directions: anti-inflammatory immune and respiratory pharmacology, neuropharmacology, molecular and oncology pharmacology. Currently the director of discipline was Professor Wu Ximei, has 10 teachers, including 5 professors (PI): Wu Ximei, Wang Xiujun, Ying Songmin, Hu Weiwei, Yang Fan and 5 associated professors: Zhang Weiping, Tang Huifang, Zhang Shihong, Lu Yunbi, and Lai Lihua.

Wu Ximei, M.D., Ph.D., Professor, Director

He got his Bachelor (1994) and Master (1997) degrees from Zhejiang University Medical School and Doctoral degree (2004) from Osaka University, Japan. He did his postdoctoral training at Washington University in St. Louis. Now, he is the director of Department of Pharmacology, and the chief member of Clinical Pharmacological Society of Zhejiang Province and Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Society of Zhejiang Province. He works to better understand organogenesis governed by a variety of signaling pathways like Wnt, Hedgehog, Hippo, Small GTPase. In addition, he is interested in research and development of respiratory new drugs for the therapy of asthma and COPD. He hopes to share our enthusiasm and excitement for science and discovery. In the recent years, he got funding from NSFC and Ministry of Science and Technology China and published papers as a first or corresponding author in the following journals: Cell, Cell Death Differ., JCEM, Oncotarget, JBC, Genetics, Cell Death Dis., Endocrinology, Biochim Biophys Acta, Cancer Lett., Mol Pharmacol. Ying Songmin, M.D., Ph.D., Professor, Vice Director

Prof. Ying got his Bachelor degree in Shantou University School of Medicine and his Master degree in University of Sheffield. After that he got his Ph.D. degree in the Technical University of Munich and did his postdoctoral training at Oxford, UK. Prof. Ying is currently working on the molecular mechanisms underlying genome stability maintenance in chronic respiratory inflammations and respiratory tumors, as well as targeted therapy for these diseases. Hitherto he has over 50 SCI publications with a total impact factor more than 350, which are cited by major journals for over 1400 times. Hu Weiwei, Ph.D., Professor

She was graduated from Zhejiang University, School of Medicine in 2007 for PhD and then worked in Zhejiang University. In 2011, she was awarded as Qiushi Young Scholar to be the doctoral supervisor. She has been trained in Hokkaido University in Japan and in Cleveland Clinic, USA. She has performed a series of studies for the pathogenesis mechanisms and drug target discovery in ischemic brain injury. She found that the drugs related to histaminergic system have potential value in the therapy of ischemic brain injury. More than 40 SCI papers have been published so far, among which above 20 are published as first author or corresponding author, including the publications in Nat Commun, Pharmacol Therapeut, Autophagy, Biomaterials, Brain Behav Immun and J Cereb Blood Flow Metab. Her research work has been funded by five National Natural Science Foundations of China including the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, the Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of Zhejiang Province, et al. In recent years, she has received a first prize of Natural Science Award of Zhejiang Province (2015, 2/5), a second prize of Teaching Achievement Award (2014，6/8), a medical altar rookie reward (2015), and the CNPHARS-SERVIER young investigator award in pharmacology (2013). Yang Fan, Ph.D., Professor

Dr. Fan Yang did his undergraduate study in the Chu KoChen Honors College, Zhejiang University (major in Biological Sciences). He was granted Ph. D. degree in University of California, Davis in 2012, where he studied the mechanism of temperature sensation by heat activation of Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) ion channel. After that Dr. Yang continued his postdoctoral training in University of California, Davis to study how the capsaicin, the chemical in Chili peppers that elicits spiciness, activates its receptor TRPV1 ion channel. Dr. Yang was awarded the Thousand Talents Plan for Young Professionals from Chinese government and the Hundred Talents Plan from Zhejiang University in 2017. His research has been published as first author (or co-first author) papers (10 in total) in journals like Nature Chemical Biology (2015), Nature Communications (2015), PNAS (2016, 2010), Science Advances (2017), eLife (2014), Journal of General Physiology (2014) and Journal of Biological Chemistry (2012). He has published more 20 SCI papers. He participated in writing the book TRP channels.

Teaching Characteristics

For Chinese students, undergraduate courses include pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology, scientific writing&expression and pharmacology&drug development, and graduate courses include Modern Pharmacology , Pharmacology topic and Clinical Pharmacology. Courses for international students include basic and Clinical Pharmacology.
