BMS-Brown Advising System Workshop

To cultivate inter-disciplinary talents with “KCVA”---Knowledge, Capacity, Vision and Arts in Biomedical Sciences, School of Basic Medical Sciences(BMS), one of seventeen National Pilot Schools, has established and implemented BMS Comprehensive Advising System based on the experience of Advising System in Brown University as well as Zhejiang University background. This System means one student will get support from five advisors---General Advisor, Research Mentor, Freshman Counselor, Peer Advisor and English Advisor.

Julianne IP, Associate Dean of Medicine from Brown, He HUANG, Chairman CPC, School of Medicine, Xiaoling ZHANG, Deputy Chairman CPC,School of Medicine,  Jimin SHAO, Deputy Chairman CPC, School of Basic Medical Sciences and representatives of Comprehensive Advising System gathered at the workshop on 23rd April to exchange opinions on the operation of Advising System.33 Other leaders and representatives from Undergraduate School, Lantian Academy of Qiushi College and College of Life Sciences of Zhejiang University attended the workshop.

The workshop was chaired by Prof. Jimin SHAO who firstly gave a warm welcome speech and appreciated the effort and assistance Prof. Julianne IP and Brown University provided on Comprehensive Advising System of BMS. Then he introduced the expectation,content,working mechanism, implementation, responsibilities of different advisors and preliminary results of Comprehensive Advising System with General Advisor and Research Mentor as the main roles and Freshman Counselor, Peer Advisor and English Advisor as the supportive roles. Later, he pointed out that this system has been reported by China Education Daily on 15th April where one could read in full.

Prof. Julianne IP, Principle of Advising System in School of Medicine, expressed sincere thanks to Prof. He HUANG, Prof. Jimin SHAO and School of Basic Medical Sciences. She specified how Advising System put into use in Brown. Then she stressed that Advising System in Brown university and Comprehensive Advising System in Zhejiang University have their features combined with their respective education backgrounds, which have made fruitful achievement and rapid progress. Advisors are affirmed to play an essential role in guiding and solving problems among students affairs. BMS students representative talked about benefit from this System by personal understanding.

Representatives of General Advisors and Counselors positively communicated and interacted with Prof. Julianne IP on how to provide better guidance to students. In the end, Prof. He HUANG acknowledged that Comprehensive Advising System, with  Advising System in Brown University for reference, broke a new path for integrating Teaching and Learning based on university and domestic education background. He expressed the hope that BMS could sum up experience as National Pilot School, leading to a good example for education and teaching.
