The School of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) of Zhejiang University takes "benevolence, truth-seeking, innovation and excellence" as its core velues. It focuses on the major strategic needs of the country, trains the highest-level medical innovative talents and leads the climb to the peaks of scientific and technological innovation. In 1996, it was apporoved as the "National Basic Science Research and Teaching Talent Training Base'. The BMS was awarded as the "National Education System Reform Pilot College" by the Ministry of Education in 2011, and designated as the "National Education System Advanced Group" in 2014. The ZJU-UoE Institute was built in the international campus of Zhejiang University in 2016. In 2017, BMS was selected into the "Double First Class" construction discipline list of the Ministry of Education, and was rated as 'A level' in the fourth round of discipline evaluationby the Miristry of Education. In 2019, the first School of Brain Science and Brain Medicine in China was established and Zhejiang University(Yuhang) Innovation Research Institute of Basic Medical Sciences was set up with the aim to promote the incubation and translation of research.
The goal and mission of the school of BMS is to provide premedical education for healthcare professionals and to cultivate tomorrow’s leader in biomedical sciences with outstanding creativity, leadership and international vision. In 2012, an undergraduate program Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Major was set up in Zhejiang University with the name "BMS Qiushi Class in Chu Kochen Honors College". New Classes of Basic Medical Sciences in the Chu Kochen Honol's College also started in 2019 and 2020 with the support from "Plan for Strengthening Basic Disciplines" of the Ministry of Education. The BMS postgraduate training system was then reformed to cultivate innovative medical talents and leaders with global competitiveness. In 2021, the school was selected as the 2.0 base of the Ministry of education's 2020 top student training plan for basic disciplines and as a national first-class undergraduate specialty construction site.
The school of BMS has the frontier science center of "Brain and Brain Computer integration' of the Ministry of Education, the science and technology resource service sharing platform of "National Health and Disease Human Brain Bank", and eight provincial and ministerial key laboratories. The BMS discipline has strong strength and advantages in the field of brain science and brain medicine, stern cells and regenerative medicine, infection and Immunity, molecular oncology,and cellular biophysics. Over the past five years, the BMS has more than 600 publications, among which 21 articles were published in either Science, Nature or Cell. 2 research achievements have been selected as "China top ten progresses of Science". 500 national scientific research funding were approved, including 381 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 42 key R&D projectsfrom the Ministry of Science and Technology of China.
The school of BMS has actively carried out multi-directional cooperation at home and abroad. We have established substantial collaboration with University of Oxford, The University of Edinburgh, Princeton University, University of Toronto, National University of Singapore and many other well-known foreign universities, and lhave undergraduate and postgraduate joint training and dual doctoral degree programs to promote academic exchanges and cooperative research.
