The 2015 BMS Annual Meeting was held

 In the morning of 22th January 2016,the grand opening ceremony of the 2015 School of Basic Medical Sciences Annual Meeting was held at Zhejiang University Zijingang Campus’ Qizhen Hotel. This year marks the seventh consecutive year of the BMS Annual Meeting and with the establishment of Zhejiang University – University of Edinburgh Institute, it celebrates the beginning of a new era of international collaboration. The theme of this year’s meeting is openness, collaboration and progress. A total of 600 teachers and students from University of Edinburgh, Chinese Institute of Science, Wenzhou Medical University and other departments from Zhejiang University’s School of Medicine attended the meeting. Distinguished teachers from renowned high schools, who were invited to attend the forum for High School and Higher Education Collaboration, also attended this Annual Meeting.

CPCC Chairman & Associate Dean of School of Basic Medical Science, Zhejiang University, Prof. SHAO Jimin hosted the opening ceremony. Vice President of Zhejiang University Professor SONG Yonghua was first to delivery his speech. President SONG emphasized that departments within universities must take the lead in Zhejiang University’s effort in becoming a world-class university. He also pointed out that the School of Basic Medical Sciences has done well in that regard, namely establishing the ZJU-UoE Institute and successfully organizing the Asia Bio-Xman Competition. This Annual Meeting has provided everyone with a great platform for academic discussion and collaboration across nations, universities schools and departments.

Next, Dean of Zhejiang University’s School of Medicine, Prof.DUAN Shumin recapped the history and development of Basic Medical School. He commended the research collaboration and the public platform, which has provided a strong support to the University. The recruitment of top talents to the university has also reached new heights and he believes that the School of Basic Medical Sciences will reach an even higher level where it will expand its international influence and its research and laboratory will become an example for the international research community to follow.

Following that, Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Professor OUYANG Hongwei presented the progress of BMS in the past year. After showing outstanding achievements of BMS in the area of research, teaching and talent development, Professor Ouyang shared three great events that happened at BMS in 2015: 1.Establishment of ZJU-UoE Institute 2.Setting up of “Zhejiang University Dasan Li Yaozheng Ye Regenerative Medicine Fund” upon receiving generous donation. 3. Successful organization of Asia Bio-Xman Competition. Professor Ouyang described BMS to have great student, great teachers, great education, great research and a great academic atmosphere. He ended off making New Year’s wishes for the School of Basic Medical Sciences.

The award presentation ceremony started at 9am. Awards were presented to 2015 Outstanding BMS Scientist, Outstanding Young Scientist, Outstanding Post-Doctorate, Outstanding Young Lecturer, Outstanding Research Service and Outstanding Adminstration Staff. Recognition was also given to the staff members who have worked for five, ten, twenty, thirty years respectively to thank them for their hard work and contribution toward the school.

 After the opening ceremony, the crowd welcomed the main event of the meeting-“Headline reports from four distinguished scientists” with a huge round of applause. 

First Academician LIN Dongxin from the Chinese Academy of Engineering introduced the discovery of gene responsible for esophageal cancer PLCE1. Professor PENG Xiaoang from the Zhejiang University Department of Chemistry presented his view on the current Chinese university education system and his version of ideal university and university education. Professor HU Hailan from the Jiushi Advanced Research Lab presented on the Effects of Chemicals in the Brain Affecting the Social Behavior. The last to present is Professor LIU Weiiu, where he introduced the topic of Signal Regulation of the Formation of Autophagy.

The Annual Meeting of the School of Basic Medical Sciences is an annual tradition that celebrates excellence in research and academics. This year, there are one main stage, 13 side stages with a total of 72 academic reports and 9 forums. Rest of reports were carried out in the afternoon of 21st and morning of 22nd by experts in the fields of neuroscience, molecular medicine, infection and immunity, cancer, stem cell and regenerative medicine. Through the success of the annual meeting and witnessing the enthusiasm from both scientist and students alike, we are glad to see Basic Medical School reach new heights in 2015 and we more confident now than ever that Zhejiang University is one step closer to becoming a truly world-class university!
